Global Game Changers Human Rights Badge: It’s a Woman’s World

“I call to order this meeting of the Girls of Global Game Changers club!” Global Girl says, bringing her gavel down on the table with an echoing bang. “Let’s start with a roll call. Treasurer Pia?”

“Present,” Pia says, a pencil tucked behind her ear.

“Vice President of Public Relations Moxie?”

“Pre-esent!” Moxie sings.

“Secretary Astra?”

“Present!” Astra declares.

“And I, President and Founder Global Girl, am also present,” she says. “Is there any old business to discuss?”

There is none, but the Girls of Global Game Changers already have a packed agenda for the day’s meeting, especially with International Women’s Day just around the corner. They have gone back and forth for weeks now about what kind of service project would make the most impact, but so far, nothing seems to be the right fit.

“We’re running out of time,” Global Girl says. “If we want to Ignite Good! for the Human Rights Badge on International Women’s Day, we need to come up with our biggest and best idea yet!”

“It’s going to be hard to beat last year,” Astra says.

“Sí,” Pia agrees. “The all-girl triathlon for the women’s shelter was a big hit.”

“And this year needs to be even bigger,” Moxie says. “Bigger, bigger, BIGGER!”

Global Girl bangs her gavel in an attempt to bring Moxie back to order, which only barely works. “Listen, we need to come up with a plan, so let’s start from the beginning. We know we want to Ignite Good! for all our sisters out there, but where do we focus our attention?”

Pia, Astra, and Moxie lean back in their chairs, thinking about all the different ways that women around the world aren’t receiving the support they need.

“Oh, I might have an idea,” Pia says, sitting up suddenly in her seat. “My teacher was telling us about something called the wage gap the other day. It means that women are not paid as much as men for the same job, and they are also less likely to get hired in the first place — especially in the business world.”

“WHAT?!” Moxie yells. “That doesn’t make any sense; we are as good as anyone! I call for a vote that we Ignite Good! against the wage gap immediately. All in favor?”

Enthusiastic yays echo around the table.

“The yays have it,” Global Girl says, closing the vote with another bang of her gavel. “Our goal is set. Now, we must come up with a step-by-step plan.”

A quick internet search gives them all the information they need about the wage gap and even a few organizations actively fighting to make a difference.

“This organization looks really cool,” Global Girl says, motioning to the website on the giant wall screen. “Dress for Success. It says here that they empower women in the workplace by providing professional clothing for free. That way, those who can’t afford to buy dress clothes can still look their best for an interview.”

“What a great idea!” Astra says. “We could do something like that but give it the Global Game Changers flair.”

“FASHION SHOW!” Moxie squeals, jumping up onto her chair to strike a pose. “We host a fashion show, we charge people an article of business clothing to get in, and then we donate the clothes to Dress for Success!”

Global Girl, with her gavel ready, stops mid-bang to consider Moxie’s idea. A wide smile stretches slowly across her face as she starts to imagine the stage, the lights, and everyone coming together to support women in the community.

“That’s actually a really good idea,” she says. “Pia? Astra?”

“Seconded!” Pia adds.

“Thirded!” Astra declares.

“Boom!” Moxie says with a pretend mic drop. “The Girls of Global Game Changers First Annual Fashion Show. I can use my Talent for sewing to put together some great costumes, and I’ll be the best host anyone has ever seen!”

“Great ideas, Moxie!” Pia adds. “ Meanwhile, I can decorate the stage.”

“While I can make the invitations!” Astra decides.

“And I’ll find us a venue and organize the event,” Global Girl says. “See what we can accomplish when we put our heads together? This is going to be the best International Women’s Day yet!”

“Only one question left,” Pia says. “Do you think we need the boys to help us?”

They pause for a moment as if seriously considering the question before all four of them break into uncontrollable laughter.

“Alright, alright,” Global Girl says, banging her gavel with one hand and wiping a tear from the corner of her eye with the other. “That’s enough joking around, girls. Let’s get to work!”
